Great!
I format prep time in the body of the post, as opposed to via a function. I simply write this in HTML mode:

Prep time: < span class="preptime" >< span class="value-title" title="PT15M" >15 minutes< /span >< /span >. Cook time: < span class="cooktime" >< span class="value-title" title="PT12H" >12 hours or overnight< /span >< /span >.

Obviously, without the spaces on each side of the brackets -- I just added the space so that the tags would show up as text here, and not actually be read as tags.

Spent hours looking for something like this! Thanks for sharing, got most of it working, however having problems getting the likes of preptime to display.

Any chance you could share a snippet from functions.php with the preptime function?

I don't think that's a problem. They won't clash -- if you do both automatic markup and manual markup, Google will just have more information. We tested it. For instance, I am automatically marking up a photo, and if I were to manually mark up a photo, too, then Google would see that the recipe has two photos and choose the first one that appears in the post. Or if you automatically mark up your tags as ingredients and then manually mark ingredients, then the ingredient list is simply more complete. Google didn't give us any errors over ingredients tagged twice, for instance.

Liz -

the new functions which Eitan wrote dynamically generate the hrecipe markup tags for you. (Which is brilliant) But I am worried that if I start hand coding the markup into individual posts, then implement the new functions later, then the dynamically generated markup tags will clash with the hand-coded tags and then Google will just ignore the whole post.

Thank you for the link. I will check it out. Paying someone to do this is not an option. I'll hope that Google eventually realizes what they are doing to the bloggers and makes some changes to accommodate us.

Plug-ins don't work for .com, I tried them before and learned they are only for .org
Thank you for your reply.

Wordpress plugins are definitely for Wordpress.org, which I use. I'm not sure if people using Wordpress.com can use them, since I don't have much experience with that platform.

What you might be able to use is web pages that mark up recipe text for you. You fill out the form on a website like http://recipeseo.com/, and it gives you text to paste into your blog. I don't know if this would work with Wordpress.com, since it might strip out the markup, but you could try and find out.

I know many people pay developers, which is one option if you don't know how/want to do the programming yourself. Anyway, Google is probably still developing its recipe search feature.

Good luck!

Oh boy. As if it isn't enough to be a cook, writer, food stylist and photographer, now we need to add web master to our list of skills to get Google to look at our food blogs.

In reference to use of plug-ins ... I thought they were only for wordpress.org sites, not .com, as many of us are.

Hopefully, Google will make some changes that makes this easier for bloggers.
