Pine nuts were made to be eaten -- really!

The tree produces nuts that the critters love. They gather them up for the winter and bury them. Some of those critters don't make it through the winter to enjoy the bounty, and new trees sprout up from the nuts below.

That has proved to be the most successful pine tree propogation strategy until the Keren Kayemet.

You must be quite gifted at cracking the nuts open. It seems to take quite a bit of finesse to crack them open witha rock without pulverizing them.

Went out to collect some: Look for the sooty black or boldly black striped ones - they're more likely to be fresher and therefore still whole. The cleaner the nut shell, the longer it's been sitting there.

Also, if I understood correctly - all pine trees have edible pine nuts, it's just that some types might be too small to bother with.
