Hi,

I think Puntarelle deserve some words,in Rome you have the best ones of course.

"Puntarelle" varieties of chicory are sweet and delicate and described in glowing terms in Antonio Carluccio’s book "Vegetables” where he recommends that they be blanched in boiling water and then drizzled with olive oil and flavoured with lemon juice or garlic and chilli. When young can be used in salads and in Italy are commonly given a soak in iced water.

Sow in seed boxes or direct for harvest in cool weather some 75-80 days from planting.. Space 15 cm apart in rows. Mature plants are best harvested in cool weather, but when small can be picked at anytime.
(From The Italian Gardener)

Thanks, Sarah! I'm sure there are many good uses for penis pasta. My sister had it at a bachelorette party in the U.S. She said they called it maccaweni.

what a fun post. I had the same impression of Italian food from my bried encounter with Rome last year. It was all simple and good, nothing overwhelming. But then again, we just hopped into any old restaurant whenever we got hungry. I wonder how bulbul shaped pasta would go down in Israel. That hilarious.
