Hi Rob, I can't say that I decided to make hamentaschen out of mochi dough for any reason other than the fact that it happened to work technically (and I like it). While I don't know very much about the Japanese new year celebrations, I'm not sure how they would be a parallel to Purim. While some say Purim developed out of the Babylonian new year, I don't know anyone who gives it that kind of meaning nowadays.

Good luck with your assignment!

I lived in Japan for four years and this brings back many happy memories. I am considering a topic for an extended assignment for my Gastronomy course, which may expand into a master's dissertation, and I am collecting information on mochi as an "event" or celebratory food. Were you influenced by the central role played by mochi in New Year's celebrations as a parallel to Purim or did you just happen to like the taste and texture and decide to adapt it?

Hey Jennifer, the only "cooking" here is in the first step, when the batter is nuked in the microwave. It goes in as a slurry, and comes out as a sticky glob.

After that, it's just a matter of assembly.

Anyway, thanks for taking an interest. I have another recipe, for baklava hamentashcen, if you'd like, too.

How should these be cooked? I'm intrigued, and would like to include this recipe in my roundup for the current Kosher Cooking Carnival, but I'm wondering if these are meant to be baked at any particular temperature, or perhaps steamed in some way? Thanks!
